In 2014, the Philadelphia Orchestra launched the second full year of its China Residency program, as well as a concert tour, with performances in China, Japan and Taiwan. Its third consecutive visit to China – a first for any American orchestra – also marked PO’s first international tour under Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin. This landmark visit featured musical, diplomatic, educational and community engagement events to commemorate the Orchestra’s continuing relationship with the Chinese people, promote the profile of Musical Director Yannick in China and reinforce the image of PO in China. The Orchestra leveraged the performance of a co-commissioned harp composition by PO and Tan Dun, world-renowned Chinese composer and Academy Award winner, to showcase PO’s special dedication to Chinese audiences. Activities included PO’s residency and community programs to help participants discover and explore social values. Over three months, the project generated 155 major articles from mainland China media. PO and Yannick were warmly welcomed in every city with sold-out concerts and enthusiastic audiences. The concert at the Shanghai Grand Theatre was the first-ever Western musical performance to be streamed to an international audience by a Chinese company.
