The Tsinghua Ruder Finn 2010 CSR Program kicks off with a keynote lecture from the Chairman of SCMP Group

June 03, 2010

On 3rd June 2010, Dr David Pang, Chairman of the South China Morning Post (SCMP) Group, and President of the Kerry Group Kuok Foundation presented a keynote lecture at the University School of Journalism and Communication. This marked the first event held by the Tsinghua Ruder Finn CSR Program in 2010. Dr Pang spoke about SCMP’s history, management model and the role of media social responsibility to an audience of teachers, students and journalists.

Dr Pang also shared personal opinions regarding the future of traditional media. In his view, media companies throughout the world are currently facing great challenges as a result of the development of new media technology and changing news consumption habits. The evolution of newspapers from just print to print plus digital, the advancement of communications from wired to wireless and the rise of the internet have all impacted the industry.

With media social responsibility being such a hot topic within the industry, Dr Pang told the audience that the Kerry Group Kuok Foundation has already been very active in many charity and aid programs. These include poverty relief, education, environmental protection, medical treatment and sanitation throughout more than ten remote mountain areas in Mainland China. The success and passionate delivery of the lecture inspired many of the attendees to express their desire to be involved in such programs to help media professionals contribute to society.

The keynote lecture by Dr Pang was the third since the inception of the Tsinghua Ruder Finn CSR Program partnership in 2008. The five-year program aims at building an effective communications platform involving the government, NGOs and business sectors. It includes both academic and business events, as well as the publication of material designed for courses on CSR at Tsinghua University. Other research studies have included the recently published CSR Index on Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) and the automobile industry which is part of the annual CSR Index on different industries. Business events will include regular keynote lectures from Fortune 500 executives and dialogue between high-level domestic and multi-national corporations’ executives and related government department leaders. Past speakers have included Anne Eleanor Roosevelt, Vice President Global Corporate Citizenship Corporate Offices of The Boeing Company and Kathy Bloomgarden, Co-CEO of Ruder Finn.
